COMMISSIONER FOR HOUSING HOSTS NIGERIAN INSTITUTE OF BUILDERS (NIOB) AS THEY CELEBRATE 2022 BUILDER'S DAY.
The chairman of The Nigerian Institute of Builders (NIOB), Delta State chapter and executive members paid a courtesy visit to the Honorable Commissioner for Housing Chief Honorable Festus Ochonogor to commemorate the National Builders day, 2022.
The Chairman appreciated the commissioner for his support to the institute and also commended his leadership prowess in managing the affairs of the ministry.
The chairman in his speech noted that the satisfactory characteristics of a building must meet convenience, aesthetics, comfortability, durability, after the ability, safety, structural stability, functionality, and economics.
To achieve these, the National Building code was approved by the Federal Executive Council in 2006. The National Building code arose as a result of the absence of planning our towns and cities, incision collapse of buildings, fire infernos, use of non-professionals amongst others.
To address these challenges, the National building code is structured to prescribe the guidelines for administering the entire process, establishes the respective classifications for building design and building construction, states the minimum requirements and standards of quality that must be infused in respective designs and material specifications by the relevant built environment professionals, particularly defined the processes for monitoring and controlling building works in the country for performance compliance.
The chairman also commended the urban and regional planning laws of Delta State 2021 as a step in right direction.
The chairman regrets the gruesome death of Innocent School pupils on 13th March, 2019 at 63 Massey Street, Lagos island and sympathized with your families stating that the event will forever remain an indelible event in the annals of our national history and in human existence and blamed the cause of their deaths to unprofessionalism, greed, insensitivity and illegal conversion of a residential building to a commercial structure.
"To commemorate this black day and other incident of building collapse across the country especially those that occur in Delta State and lately the the Bar. Okoro resident at Okpanam, housing Salvation Ministry church where lives were lost and to create adequate awareness on the need to engage professionals particularly the builders in the construction of building and sundry deliverables, the Nigerian Institute of Builders has chosen 13th March every year to mark the Builders Day and also to create awareness for building professionalism", the chairman added.
The Commissioner for Housing, Chief Honorable Festus Ochonogor thanked the institute for the visit to his office and emphasized on the theme for the year's national day; BUILDING WITH INTEGRITY
The commissioner noted that Builders are major contributors to a well established Urban and Regional Development and for Urban development to thrive, there need to be synergy amongst the various categories of builders.
The commissioner stressed the need for builders to build and carryout their duties with a high level of integrity. He Noted that negligence at any point of the building process may cause a great and harmful effect to the society, lives, and properties.
He pointed out that integrity and negligence has a ripple and after effects on the general life of a professional. The attitude one puts in to work can also be seen in his attitude towards any other endeavor he may undertake.
He stated the contributions and dedication of the Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa in promoting urban and regional development in the State and the policies in place to make it achievable.
The commissioner encouraged the Institute to fully take advantage of the provisions of the policies, work with them and identify possible amendments in the future.
Also, strict penalties should be fully implemented for any professional who goes against the building codes the commissioner added.
