ASUU seeks bill to ban foreign education for children of public officials




The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have called for a bill to regulate how children of public officers enroll in schools outside the shores of Nigeria. 

Kingdom Tombra, Chairman of the University of Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island chapter of the union, made this known at the solidarity protest organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday in Yenagoa.

Recall that the NLC embarked on the nationwide protest in solidarity with the ASUU and other affiliate unions over the lingering nationwide industrial action in public universities in Nigeria.

“If this is done, it will build a better society by developing formidable educational institutions and improve funding of the university system in Nigeria. 

“This struggle is not against government, but about the working class and against the ruling class and we are very committed to it

“If the rich and poor go to the same university or institution, I don’t think the strike will occur again.

“If they school here and their children are here they will show total support for the university system and the tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” he said.

Lecturers in government-owned universities commenced a nationwide strike on February 14, over the adoption of University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as a payment system in the university sector.

Senators Move To Impeach Ahmed Lawan As Senate President

The Senator representing Osun East and Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Customs and Excise, Francis Fadahunsi, has said that opposition parties in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, have made up their minds to sack the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, if he made any attempt to frustrate the sacking process against the President, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), next month. BREAKING NEWS: HOUSE OF REPS CONCURS WITH SENATE ON OMO-AGEGE ANTI-SEXUAL HARASSMENT BILL

The House of Representatives has, by way of concurrence with the Senate, passed the Senator Ovie Omo-Agege ‘Bill for an Act to make Comprehensive Provisions for the Prohibition and Punishment of Sexual Harassment of Students by Educators in Tertiary Educational Institutions’. The House passed the Bill in its Committee of the Whole on Tuesday, February 8, 2022.  This is a major development in the principled quest for a stringent national law to properly deal with the inhuman scourge of sexual harassment in our academic campuses.  With this development, the Bill will now be transmitted to President Muhammadu Buhari for his assent.
