Employers Risk One-month Imprisonment For Late Payment Of Salaries

House of Representatives has passed for second reading a bill to prohibit late payment of salaries, underpayment of wages, pension, and other emoluments in Nigeria. The bill sponsored by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila has passed for second reading following the debate on the general principle of the bill. The bill seeks to prohibit employees from owing salaries and other emoluments. The bill is prescribing punishment for such employers. For instance, owing salaries above 60days, such an employer risks 30 days imprisonment. Section 2 of the bill provides that “Every employer of labor in Nigeria, whether private or public, and whether it is employing any worker on permanent or contract basis must ensure that all payment of wages, salaries, pension and all benefits to workers are paid promptly without delay weekly, fortnightly monthly, quarterly or yearly as may be agreed by parties in the contract of employment of the additional individuals” In addition, the bill prohibits ar...

16 year old Anita Chukwudum declared missing after leaving her home in Lagos to Abuja to meet a person she met on Facebook who promised to send her to Germany The family of 16-year-old Chidinma Anita Chukwudum pictured above has declared her missing. Anita resides in Festac town Lagos state and was last seen on September 18. Her mother Mrs. Uche Chukwudum who confirmed this to LIB said Anita just finished secondary school, wrote JAMB, had a good score, and is about to gain admission into the Lagos State University LASU. Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has revealed that he was wooed to join the All Progressive Congress by its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Wike said on Friday September 23, that he was offered a senatorial ticket by Tinubu which he rejected even after Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, failed to fulfill his promise after winning the party's primary election. He stated that he didn't contest the primary to settle for a vice-presidential or senatorial ticket and will remain in PDP.  Wike said;  “I didn’t contest so I can become a vice presidential candidate, I am not like others who were not serious and bought senatorial form alongside presidential form and that’s why when Tinubu offered me senate slot, I didn’t go for it.’’   This is coming months after some governors elected under the platform of APC met with Wike in Port Harcourt, Rivers State’s capital ahead of the 2023 elections.

Okowa deplores poor services by BEDC

Delta Governor and Vice-Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has deplored poor supply of electricity to the consumers in the state by Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).  Okowa expressed his displeasure over the situation at the official opening of Lumen Christi College, Maryhill, Owanta, Ika North East Local Santament Area of the State on Thursday.  He said that even when residents and communities procured transformers and handed over to BEDC, "they will still them l charge them to energise it".  According to the energizer, sometimes you install a transformer, and the distribution company will ask you to come and pay even when you are handing over that transformer to them.  He regretted that "even when you are ready to pay, they will delay you for six months and even for one year. Some gunmen have abducted the Vice Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, Frank Esiwo Ozue. Mr. Ozue who was said to be traveling to Patani was kidnapped by armed men on Sunday at Ogor town in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state. A 46year-old man, Olusegun Oluwole, has reportedly r@ped his daughter in Ogun, saying he did not know what came over him while perpetrating the incestuous act. Security Operatives have arrested Oluwole following a complaint the victim lodged at the Ibara Police Station in Abeokuta. The victim had visited the police station in the company of some operatives of the So-Safe Corps to report the incident. Delta State Government has advised principals and teachers against lateness and absenteeism as the 2022/2023 academic session resumes on Monday 12/9/2022 The Delta State Commissioner for Primary Education, Mr. Sunny Onoriode, who gave the warning in Asaba, the state capital, on the preparation for schools resumption, said the government would not stumble to sanction anyone found wanting.  He stressed that Government is concerned over situations where principals, teachers, and in some cases pupils and students return late.  Such attitudes influence negatively the school system and therefore should be discouraged. We are urging the teachers to turn a new leaf.  Parents and caretakers should guarantee that their children return to school unfailingly as schools for normal academic activities.

The police in Kwara state have arrested a 23-year-old man, Ibrahim Hassan, pictured above for allegedly k!lling his 90-year-old father, Sabi Ibrahim, in the Ajibesin area, along Okolowo Ilorin to have access to his bank account. An intelligence investigation has led to the arrest of the prime suspect, Iyegbunuwe Oluchukwu ‘m’ of Issele-Uku.  The suspect led the detectives to their hideout at Onicha-Ugbo in Aniocha North LGA, where two other suspects, one Okwudili Ozah ‘m’ and Esther Nwoko ‘f’, were arrested and One (1) English revolver pistol, fifteen (15) rounds of live ammunition, and six (6) expended ammunition were recovered.
